It's been an incredibly busy year so far, including organizing the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting as an Early Career Representative and launching a new monthly newsletter for the Early Career Committee of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography. I'm also happy to announce that two long-term collaborative efforts that I led have been published this summer.
First, I led a manuscript recently published in Biogeochemistry Letters in which we investigated the biogeochemical effects of the interaction between fire and precipitation in aridland watersheds in the western U.S. Using fantastic, long-term datasets, courtesy of the Santa Barbara Coastal LTER (California) and Valles Caldera National Preserve (New Mexico), we found that responses to the interaction between fire and precipitation varied by solute and were likely moderated by both hydroclimate (i.e., Mediterranean vs. monsoonal) and watershed characteristics (i.e., lithology). Across all solutes, we found responses were lagged or persisted on the order of multiple years (2-5), suggesting precipitation strongly influences solute export from aridland watersheds following fire. In addition, I led an opinion piece recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences advocating for the benefits of creating postdoctoral consortia. This was a true team effort, including several dozen colleagues from the Modelscapes Consortium and with beautiful artwork courtesy of Alex Boersma. In the piece, we describe our experiences working as part of a multi-institutional consortium and present how such consortia can support better professional development for postdoctoral scholars while maintaining productivity, building community, and prioritizing inclusivity. If you have questions about any of the approaches or topics brought up in these two manuscripts, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly! Both projects are part of larger, ongoing efforts, and I'd be happy to discuss them further if you are at all interested. |
